What Is PAT Testing?
PAT testing — Portable Appliance Testing — is the process of inspecting and testing electrical appliances to confirm they are safe to use. It involves a combination of visual checks and electrical tests carried out using a calibrated PAT testing instrument. The aim is to identify faults such as damaged cables, defective plugs, poor insulation, or missing earth connections before they cause harm.
Every plug-in appliance in a workplace or rental property is covered — from desktop computers and monitors to kettles, microwaves, extension leads, phone chargers, and power tools. Each item is visually inspected for signs of damage or wear, then subjected to electrical tests including earth continuity, insulation resistance, and lead polarity. Appliances that pass are labelled with a dated pass sticker showing when the next test is due. Any items that fail are clearly marked and removed from service.
While PAT testing is not explicitly mandated by a single piece of legislation, the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 place a duty on employers and duty holders to maintain electrical equipment in a safe condition. PAT testing is the industry-standard method of demonstrating compliance. It is also a requirement of most business insurance policies and is expected by health and safety auditors. MB Electrical provides fast, thorough PAT testing across Bristol for businesses of all sizes, landlords, and commercial premises, with full documentation and certificates provided on completion.
MB Electrical holds NICEIC Approved Contractor status — the highest tier of NICEIC accreditation. Unlike the Domestic Installer scheme held by many electricians, Approved Contractor status requires regular assessment of competence across domestic, commercial, and industrial electrical work, giving you confidence that every job meets the highest professional standards.
